Missions

The Sunset Mission Ministry has many areas in which it is involved.  Below you will see some of the areas that we support and work in directly.

Guadalajara Multiple Church Planting

The Guadalajara Multiple Church Planting project provides some of the needed funds to support a quality Mexican church planter to begin new works in areas of Guadalajara. Gerardo and Carola Garcia have been working with the new church plants in Jardines del Valle that grew out of the original La Estancia congregation. This congregation is now planting other congregations. We enjoyed having Gerardo with us at Sunset this past year. Gerardo and Carola have started a Youth Diabetes Association to minister to youth facing the challenge of living with diabetes. The original Guadalajara Multiple Church Planting strategy calls for an increase in Mexican support and a decrease in Sunset’s support. Pray that God will raise up more Mexican workers.

Doug and Sandy Holcomb Cuernavaca, Mexico

Doug and Sandy Holcomb are into the third year of their second term as missionaries in Cuernavaca. They have been joined by two families who are graduates of SIBI: Ben and Karen Jenkins and Paul and Sharita Nash. The Jenkins and the Nash families have made Cuernavaca their home and are making significant contributions to the mission effort. The original church planting in Cuernavaca is completely self-supporting and Mexican led. The new church planting is growing and nearing 50 in attendance. The Cuernavaca mission team will be receiving an AIM team this May. The Holcombs are supported by the 10th and Broad congregation in Wichita Falls, Texas. Pray for the fruit that the Lord brings from the Holcomb’s efforts.

Adventures in Missions Students

We are currently supporting Sunset AIM students. Pray that God will lead more of our young men and women to make it their "aim" to preach the gospel.

World Bible School

We have approximately 50 Sunset members actively involved in the World Bible School program. Gary Havenhill is the deacon who has been assigned to work with the World Bible School program here at Sunset. They are continually recruiting new WBS teachers from our own members. Pray that the Lord will raise up others from our number to share the good news through this amazing correspondence opportunity.

Sunset Youth Mission Work

These funds are allotted to the Youth Ministry to supplement the funds used to send the Sunset youth on summer mission trips. We believe that these mission trips are one of the contributing factors to the number of Sunset supported AIM students we have this year. Please pray that the Lord not only uses these mission opportunities to touch the lost but also to train our youth to become world Christians.

Sunset University Mission Work

This contribution supplements funds provided by students and the Cross Campus ministry to send our students on mission trips throughout the year. Pray that God will raise up mission leaders among our university ministry.

Family Mission Work

These funds help to send our Sunset families to Mexico to minister at the House of Hope Children’s Home in Anahuac, Mexico. This is a great experience for our families as they minister to the children but also reach out to the local communities with the message of Jesus. Pray for our families to develop the heart of Jesus.

Congregational Mission Travel

We have many elders, ministers, mission committee members and several of our members to become personally involved in mission works through evangelistic campaigns and travel to mission fields. These funds help many of our own members to be personally involved in mission work around the world. From these funds we will make a contribution to help some of our members join the India City Evangelism’s yearly travel to India.

Sunset Mission Sunday and Mission Seminar

In congunction with the Mission Sunday contribution that is collected every year, Sunset conducts a Mission Seminar to help educate and motivate us with our mission efforts both here and abroad.

New Opportunities

Mission work provides new and unexpected opportunities each year. We receive more requests than we will ever be able to respond to with the funds available. This fund enables us to respond to emergency situations which arise unexpectedly on our mission fields. This fund also gives us the opportunity to respond to worthy mission works with one-time contributions.

2009 Mission Sunday: October 4, 2009

2009 Goal: $261,350

2008 Actual: $272,978.19

God has blessed the Sunset congregation to enable us to exceed our Mission Goal. We give glory to God for His generous mission work through the Sunset Church. Please continue to pray and "Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field." Luke 10:2b.

David and Olivia Nelson - Kharkov, Urkaine

The Mission Ministry is excited about the opportunity we have to sponsor the Nelson family (one of our own) on their mission to Ukraine. The Nelsons joined the McDougles in Kharkov, Ukraine. Please be praying for the Nelson’s as they continue to grow and learn in a new culture to preach the gospel.

James and Erin Henderson - Mexico City, Mexico

James and Erin Henderson are working in a southern delegation of Mexico City named Tlalpan. They have completed over 5 years of effective ministry in Mexico City. God has used them to plant one congregation which is in the process of multiplying themselves in a new church plant and into 5 new house churches. Pray for God to continue His work through the life of the Henderson family.

Mike and Lucy McDougle - Kharkov, Ukraine

Mike and Lucy McDougle are one of our own mission families. They arrived in Moscow, Russia in January of 2008 to begin settling into the culture and the language and to prepare for the arrival of their teammates, Rob and Denyce Hindman and David and Olivia Nelson. After a change in visa laws in Russia, the team decided to locate in Kharkov, Ukraine. The McDougle's have added to their family with the addition of Max.

Elijah Peters - Auckland, New Zealand

Sunset helped three families begin their new mission work in Auckland, New Zealand. Justin and Jennifer Cherry, Skylar and Morgan Ely and Elijah and Kristen Peters have arrived in New Zealand and are settling in to begin their church planting work. The funds used to get this team started are taken from savings from past years. We have these funds set aside for a commitment of three years. Please pray for God to open the door for the New Zealand team as they share the good news in Auckland.

Cory and Toni Burns - Guadalajara, Mexico

Cory and Toni have worked in significant ways with truth-seekers in their neighborhood and have been used by God to bring several to the Lord. They are being used to begin a new house church and to continue to train and encourage other house churches. The Guadalajara work will be receives an AIM teams that Cory coordinates. They host our youth and university students for mission trips.

Chadd and Nancy Schoeder - Guadalajara, Mexico

The Schroeder family is four years into their third missionary term in Mexico. They have been involved in Mexico mission work for 16 years. The original church plant has multiplied into several house churches. These communities of faith are growing in their vision for reproducing themselves in all areas of Guadalajara and beyond.

A Men's Weekend

I had a great time with 10 of my friends this past weekend.  Six of us from Guadalajara met up with five guys from Mexico City at a cabin on the east side of Mexico City—in the shadow of the volcano, Iztaccíhuatl.  After several weeks of prayer and preparation, we wanted to spend the weekend with God and with one another in conversation about our role as men—in our families, jobs, churches and communities.  We wanted to be brutally honest with ourselves and with each other about how our life

Peters Family Photos

Per special request...

Here are a few photos to catch all of you up on the family.

Sunday Russian Assembly

Tonight we had our normal Russian assembly, but were excited to have some visitors. One couple just moved to Kharkov and got our contact information from a preacher in another city whom we have never met. However, he got our contact information from an invitation that we sent in the mail inviting their congregation to our Creation Seminar back in December.

Again, sorry for the poor quality of the photos. I keep telling Lucy I need to get a phone with a better camera on it!

Kia Ora (w/o the video) - #4

Kia Ora Everyone,

What a week we have had...two trips to the Airport, tons of administrative duties, and topping it off...we got to celebrate Kristen's Birthday!

As for the love of my life...she is the best helpmate I could ever dream of, and waking up next to her every day reminds me daily of God's grace and kindness. Celebrating her birthday is more than just marking a special day, it's a day to honor God for how he works through those around us to complete his work within us.

Yesterday was the Ukrainian Presidential Election. Since no candidate received over 50% of the vote there will be a run-off vote in three weeks.
