Monty Pettyjohn - Lead Minister
Monty Pettyjohn was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Feb. 16, 1961. He grew up in Shawnee and graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma. He met Diana in Shawnee while she was a co-worker with his dad in the engineering department at Southwestern Bell. They married on May 15, 1982. Monty and Diana have two grown sons, Austin and Tate.
Monty graduated from SIBI in 1992 and became the pulpit minister in Burlington, Colorado. He was the minister there for eight years before becoming the Education Minister at Waterview church of Christ in Richardson, TX, where he served from 2000 - 2005. In June of 2005, he took the position of Director of Placement with SIBI. He began serving as an elder at Sunset in October of 2007. Monty transitioned into the role of Lead Minister in 2010. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, racquetball, and tennis. He especially enjoys hiking mountain trails with Diana.
Bill Tracy - Spiritual Involvement Minister
Bill was born in Pueblo, Colorado on October 14, 1959. He attended Lubbock Christian University and Texas Tech, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Speech Communications, with a certification in secondary education. He taught junior high at Christian Heritage Schools in San Antonio, Texas from 1983-1985.
Bill met his wife, Betty in San Antonio and they married in 1984. In 1985, Bill took on the roll of youth minister at the MacArthur Park Church of Christ in San Antonio where he worked for seven years. Bill and Betty have three children, Joshua, Matthew and Katie. In 1991, Bill and Betty moved to Lubbock to attend Sunset International Bible Institute. They graduated from Sunset in June of 1993 and enrolled in the Missions program where they graduated in December. In 1994, Bill and Betty left with a church planting team for San Diego, CA where they worked for seven years. Bill was asked to return to Sunset International Bible Institute in 2001 where he served as Assistant Dean of Missions.
Bill's favorite scripture is Ephesians 3:20-21. His favorite hobby is spending time with his children. In addition, Bill enjoys reading and watching sports. His favorite food is chicken fried steak.
Charles Speer - Preaching Team Minister
Charles was born in Richardson, TX in 1948. His mother was a Christian and reared him in the Lord. He was baptized into Christ as a young man in Richardson and has sought the Lord fervently ever since. Charles is married to Cara (Gilbert) Speer, who also was raised in Dallas by a godly mother. Charles and Cara have two children, Bryn who is band director at Westlake High School in Austin, TX and Jamin, who is a graduate student in Economics at Yale University in Connecticut.
Charles was educated at Southern Methodist University (1970-Bachelor of Electrical Engineering), Sunset School of Preaching (1972), Sunset School of Missions (1986), and Lubbock Christian University (1996-Master of Arts in New Testament). He served as a youth minister in Dallas from 1972 - 1977, a pulpit minister in Weatherford, OK from 1977-1985, a missionary to New Zealand from 1986 - 1989, and is currently an instructor and the Dean of Residential Studies at Sunset International Bible Institute.
Charles loves to spend vacation time with family and play golf with good friends. He believes strongly in the principles of II Timothy 2:2, "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."
Rodney Roberts - Involvement Minister
Rodney was born on July 9, 1955 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He moved to Lubbock and received his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from Texas Tech University.
Rodney met Sherry Burns while attending high school and they married in 1976. They have two children, Jenna and Cannon. Rodney and his family have been active at Sunset since 1988. He worked as an architect in private practice for over twenty years. When Sunset began a search for an Involvement Minister they began to look internally and approached Rodney with the idea of changing careers. "I saw this as a great honor and opportunity to serve the Lord as a part of the ministry staff at Sunset and felt the Lord had opened a door for me that I never expected." He began his fulltime work at Sunset on May 15, 2000. His favorite scripture is Ephesians 4:11-13. His favorite food is Mexican and his favorite sport is basketball. He also enjoys golf and spending time with family.
Jeff Reese - Administrator
Jeff was born in Odessa, Texas on August 13, 1965. He met Brenda Flowers of Muleshoe while attending LCU and they were married in 1987. Jeff graduated from LCU with a degree in Business Administration. He and Brenda have two sons, Justin and Branson.
Having worked at Wal-Mart as an assistant manager for 4 years and then for the Selle Insulation for 10 years, Jeff has become a valuable asset to the Sunset staff as Administrator since 2002.
Jeff loves Mexican food, camping, baseball and paintball. He especially enjoys coaching his sons in baseball and watching them play.
Jeff Smith - University Minister
Jeff was born March 15, 1962 in Wichita, Kansas. His family moved to Lubbock in 1966 to attend the Sunset School of Preaching. He met Stacy Lowman when they were both teenagers and members of the Sunset youth group. They married in 1981 and are blessed with two wonderful children, Kristin and Daniel.
In 1984 Jeff attended SSOP and afterwards began his first full-time ministry in Phoenix, Arizona. Having served there two years as youth minister, he moved to Dewey, Oklahoma serving as Associate Minister. In 1995 he was invited back to his "home" congregation to serve as the university minister for the Sunset church. Jeff received a Bachelor of Religious Education from Rochester College.
Jeff's favorite scripture is Romans 8:28. Likewise, he enjoys playing golf and softball. Jeff's favorite food is chicken fried steak.
Jeremy Smith - Youth Minister
Jeremy was born June 3rd, 1987 in Amarillo, Texas and grew up in Baldwin, Kansas. Jeremy moved to Lubbock in 2005 to attend Lubbock Christian University where he graduated in 2010 with a Bachelors in Arts in Youth and Family Ministry. He continued at LCU and worked on his Masters. Jeremy transferred to ACU where he is currently working on a Masters of Divinity.
While at LCU he worked as a Youth Minister in Anton, Texas and as an assistant director with the White River Youth Camp in the summers. He then became the college minister at Southern Hills Church of Christ in Abilene. In 2012 Jeremy came to work as a youth minster here at the Sunset Church of Christ.
Jeremy's favorite Bible scriptures are Psalm 91 and 2 Peter 1:4. He loves people and enjoys spending time with family and friends playing games. His favorite food is Bar B Q and his favorite restaurant is Chipotle.
Scott Rektenwald - Youth Minister
Scott was born in Vernon, Texas on April 1, 1983 and graduated from LCU with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education. While at LCU Scott met his wife, Amy. They have a son Josiah who was born in 2011.
After graduating Scott and his family moved to Clovis, NM where he became the Youth and Family Minister. They moved to Lubbock in Januray 2012 to begin working with Sunset.
Scott's favorite scripture is Psalm 117. He enjoys Mexican food, vacationing with his family and doing almost any sort of sports or outdoor activity.
Libby German - Children's Minister
Libby was born October 30, 1958 in Hobbs, New Mexico. She was the youngest of four children and grew up on a small ranch where her parents still reside. Libby graduated from Harding University in 1980 with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. She moved to Lubbock in January of 1981 and met her husband Steve in the singles class at Sunset. They married in August of 1982 and have two daughters, Gerianne and Gina and one son Cody.
After working as a critical-care nurse for almost 15 years, Libby decided to make a career change and joined the staff at Sunset as one of the Children's Ministry coordinators. Her main responsibility is staff recruitment. She loves to teach Bible class and enjoys singing with the children.
Carolyn Wright - 'Just Kids' Preschool Director
Carolyn grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts. She is the oldest of 5 children. She came to Lubbock in January 1979 to attend SSOP where she met her husband Richard. They married in 1982 and have attended Sunset and taught Bible classes for over 20 years. Carolyn has one son, Adam.
For over 20 years, Carolyn has passionatly given herself to the ministry of "Just Kids." She strives daily to make the school a place where children can grow up to be strong and able. Carolyn's passion has helped her to establish an all-star staff of workers who are dedicated to the well being of children within the community.
Shelly Towns - 'Just Kids' Preschool Assistant Director
Shelly was born and raised in Lubbock and has been a life long member at Sunset. She graduated from Monterey High School then Texas Tech University in 1993. She met her husband Kent in the youth group at Sunset when she was 16. They were married five years later and have 3 boys, Connor, Keaton, and Carson.
Shelly has taught in the three year old class room as well as with the four year olds. She has been assistant director since 2010.
Truitt Adair - SIBI Director
Truitt was born in Phoenix, Arizona on December 28, 1944. He married Sandra Kay (Troy) in 1963. Truitt and Kay have four children.
Truitt's biblical training was received as Sunset School of Preaching, Sunset School of Missions, Lubbock Christian University and Abilene Christian University. Truitt has served as pulpit minister for churches in Texas and Arizona. He and his family served as missionaries in Nigeria, West Africa from 1973 to 1976.
In 1989 Truitt came to Lubbock as a teacher at Sunset International Bible Institute and in 1993 was appointed Executive Director. He is interested in tennis, fishing, travel and world history and is passionate about preaching, leadership training, missions, and family, especially grand parenting.
